Pre-Preptober

What is Pre-Preptober?

For many writers, especially indie writers, November is one of the most stress-inducing, crazed filled, amazing months in the hobby. November is officially National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo. There are smaller events, or “camps” in April and July, but the Big One is November. The original goal of NaNoWriMo was to write 50,000 words between November 1st and November 30th. These days, there are many variations of this goal, though NaNoWriMo still touts the original idea.

October is known as Preptober. This is where NaNoWriMo participants begin to plan the work they will write in November. Preptober is usually the domain of the Planners or people who prefer to go into NaNo prepared. October is used to gather ideas, outline, and flesh out the novel as much as possible before the actual writing. You also have Pantsters, who don’t typically do much prep before November. You’ll find Plantsters as well, who are a combination of both and may do some planning but may also mostly go about their NaNo project by the seat of their pants.

So, what is Pre-Preptober? That’s September. Pre-Preptober is all about getting into the mindset of NaNoWriMo. It’s where writers gather ideas for their NaNo project. It’s where they begin to get excited and anxious. Anxious for it to start and anxious because it’s beginning. See, while NaNoWriMo is incredibly fun from a peer and community perspective, it can be downright panic-inducing to actually do. With the holidays quickly arriving and the end of the year just around the corner, we writers torture ourselves by adding a big project to the chaos.

Pre-Preptober is about getting your head into the game. It’s similar to the feeling you used to get as a kid when the first Christmas song started playing on the radio. It’s the pep talk from the coach. Pre-Preptober is all about the hype.

Right now, I’m getting into the NaNo headspace. I can’t wait for November to get here, and it’s not because of the turkey.
